GŌNG Bar unveils its new cocktail menu – ‘Director’s Cut’

We were super lucky to have been invited to GŌNG Bar’s new cocktail menu launch party at the Shangri-La Hotel, at The Shard. GŌNG bar is the highest hotel bar in Western Europe and is located on level 52, which gives you an amazing view over London.

The place was buzzing, with a live band playing both classic and recent hits.

This had to be one of the coolest menu launch events that we’ve attended. Great venue, cool band, super friendly bar team and of course a unique and inventive cocktail menu.

If this wasn’t good enough, a Woody Allen lookalike was also present on the night, and he was a very nice and entertaining gentleman, who actually does Woody Allen stand-up comedy tributes for a living.

The new cocktail menu had 16 new cocktails, but unfortunately,  we were only able to work our way through three of them as we only had a couple of hours. The ones we tried were: Fear The Jungle (pisco-based and garnished with a scorpion), Storm & Marbles (almost de-constructed in three pots and featuring Zacapa 23) and History Became Legend (smoky with Havana Seleccion de Maestros). The latter two were the only two to feature rum and as you may already know, we love our rum, so we had to try them.

Each of the menu’s drinks was inspired by film directors, from Woody Allen to Peter Jackson. The full list is here – and oh how we wish we could have tried them all. After our bar time ended, everyone was ushered through to the surprise infinity pool room where a Negroni was served to all the guests to mark the end of the event.

Below are the pictures of the new cocktails. The creation of the menu took about a year, you can definitely tell that there has been a lot of work put into the creation of each drink, and this is reflected in the presentation, detail and taste of these amazing cocktails. Price-wise, they’re around £18 each, which is firmly in the top price tier. However, it’s justified by its status as a destination bar, and indeed the highest bar in London. Combined with the cocktails, they’re going for the wow factor.

We would like thank Su-Lin, Bar manager Fabio Dal Bosco, head bartender, Christian Maspes and all the bar team for this amazing event. We hope to visit the bar again in the near future.

We would highly recommend this place as it is something quite unique, classy and fun, and definitely a ‘destination’ bar. We would go as far as saying that it is one of the best bars we have been to so far.

PS – both of us ate our scorpions – where else would we get the chance?!

With a concoction for every taste, guests are invited to embark on a
sensory journey through the world of cinema and use their imagination to create their own story while at the highest hotel bar in Western Europe.”

A total of 16 cocktails and four mocktails span five themed categories – Adventure/Fantasy; Romantic/SciFi; Thriller/ Drama; Crime/Action and Animation/ Superhero. The Adventure/ Fantasy category features light and refreshing cocktails, whereas Romantic/Sci-Fi explores drinks with fruity notes, flora and spices. Opposites attract in the Thriller/Drama section where sweet meets sour, while the creations are punchy and full of character in the Crime/Action category.
The list closes with the Animation/Superhero category, which features herbal and earthy non-alcoholic flavours.

Mirroring the creativity and craft required to produce a film, each cocktail has its own unique method of invention; from the brewing of pineapple and coriander with cold coffee, to infusing a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with pine needles and honey. Distinct flavours that excite the palate have been created by combining house-made infusions with rare ingredients and the finest spirits. Manzanilla sherry, tamarind tea, black sesame bitters weave in unexpectedly with unique liquors such as Gagliardo, Glacial Pastis and Root Herb Spirit. Meanwhile such ingredients as red rice wine, carbonated olives and chai tea foam create sensational touches and textures.

GONG’s Head Bartender Christian Maspes said: “We are thrilled to be sharing these adventurous, unique drinks with our guests. The cocktails have been inspired by different film directors who are globally recognised masters of their craft. Just as a great film is a harmony of cinematography, sound and great
acting, the same can be said for a truly fantastic cocktail through its blend of ingredients, technical skill and the atmosphere it creates.”

The new cocktail menu is available at GŎNG bar from 26 April 2017. Located at the pinnacle of Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London, GŎNG Bar is a sky lounge destination crafted by renowned architect Andre Fu of AFSO. The elevated bar provides a vast array of fine wines, spirits, cocktails, champagnes as well as sweeping views of London’s iconic skyline. It comprises two bars – a cocktail bar and a champagne bar, as well as an infinity Sky Pool Bar which opens daily from 9 p.m. GONG Bar is open to residents and nonresidents Monday to Saturday from noon – until 1a.m. and on Sunday from noon to midnight.
